Types of Meters
In common household use there are three types of meters.
Standard meters
A standard meter is a basic electromechanical induction meter, and usually measures your electricity
consumption in terms of kilowatt-hours - the amount of energy used by a load of one kilowatt over the period of one hour.
When this meter is installed, all electricity units are charged at the same rate, 24 hours a day.
Variable rate meters
Economy 7 meters are often referred as variable rate meters and they are used for many tariffs suppliers offer. Economy 7 and standard meters operate on the same principle except they give two readings and they are:
• one for daytime electricity usage
• and for one night-time electricity usage.
In this way your supplier may have to charge you in a different
rate for your electricity usage at night time and day time.
Prepayment meters
Prepayment meters is when the customer stops paying for electricity bills, the supply will be cut off by a
relay fitted into the meter and prepayment meters mostly of the time accept tokens or cards that can be bought
or topped up. The advantage of prepayment meter is that you can budget it out for how much of electricity you
will be using by paying for it before you use.
