Items That Can Be Recycled
It's clear to us that if we all do our part...with the planet at heart... we will have cleaner
air, water and earth to live by!

Many things can be recycled. Check your town to see what items you can recycle. Then help your family take
those items to the recycle drop off center, or use curb side recycling when available.
Aerosols
Aerosols can be recycled. Ensure that your aerosol is completely empty before you decide to recycle it. Aerosols can be stored for a long time so hold on to a half empty can if possible.
Do not pierce, crush or flatten the aerosol before recycling. Also, detach any loose or easily removable parts, such as the lid, and
dispose of them with the rest of your rubbish.
What are aerosols made from?
The main part of an aerosol is the can and 60% of these are made from tinplated steel. The remaining 40% are made from aluminium. Both of these metals are recyclable. Aerosols also contain some small plastic and rubber components including the lid, valve and dip tube.
Make sure they’re empty and put them in your recycling bag, basket or bin for collection.

Aluminium foil and lids
Foil cannot be recycled but you can reuse it. Fold it up and keep it until you need it again. If it can’t be reused, put it out with the rest of your non-recyclable rubbish.

Batteries
• All waste batteries are classified as harmful waste and recycling is always the best option.
• Rechargeable batteries contain harmful metals they should be returned to manufacturer for disposal or recycled elsewhere, so they should never be thrown away with daily rubbish.
• For recycling advice contact the battery manufacturer.
• Rechargeable batteries can last a long time and it produce ess waste and are the most environmentally friendly selection.

Books
Books in good condition can be donated to the many charity shops around Malaysia. Books can also be recycled at your local Scope bin. The easiest way to recycle books is to take them out of your local library.

Building Materials
• Buildings are made from different materials, many of which are recyclable such as metal, wood, glass, etc...
• Items for reselling may take some architectural recover yards.
• Bricks and wood can be reused to different kinds of materials to building.

Bottles and Jars
Bottles and jars can be recycled. Just put them in your recycling bag, basket or bin for collection.

Cardboard
Make sure that any staples are taken out of boxes or packaging and squash the cardboard flat. It can then be recycled in your bag,
basket or recycle bin.

Carpets
Some recycling centers accept carpets. mats or rugs for recycling but services vary across the country. Instead, if your carpet is in good condition, try selling it! Advertise in local papers or on community noticeboards.

CDs/Videos and DVDs
Old CDs,Videos and DVDs can be recycled using the SCOPE bins which are dotted around the city.

Cereal Boxes
Flatten down the cardboard and add them to your recycling bag, basket or bin for collection.
Children’s Toys
These can’t be recycled. Why not donate them to a local charity shop like CRC (Ren Ren) ?
Christmas Cards
Old cards and paper can be re-used for making present tags or paperchains. Otherwise, you can recycle them by putting them in your recycling bag, basket or bin for collection. Remember: metallic paper cannot be recycled - try not to buy it!

Clinical Waste
• Using special methods to disposed clinical waste such as nappies, sanitary waste and medical supplies have
the potential to be infectious.
• When disposing needles and syringes please be very careful.
• Look for doctors or manufacturer instructions of how to dispose of medical waste on the packaging containers.
• Once the medicine containers are empty it can be recycled accordingly.
Compost
To recycle kitchen and garden waste is an excellent way to compost. Composting helps your gardens grow. Things to add to your compost pile:
• Animal bedding and sawdust
• Crushed egg shells
• Grass and plant cuttings
• Hair and fur
• Horse manure
• Leaves
• Raw fruit and vegetable trimmings
• Shredded paper
• Straw and hay
• Teabags and coffee granules
Computers
Electronic rubbish, and computer equipment in particular, is a rapidly expanding waste. Rapid technological
change means there are always newer, better, more better products on the market.
Why is it important to recycle computer equipment?
Discarded computer equipment comprises monitors, printers, hard drives and circuit boards. Such items should on no account be thrown out with your household rubbish because they contain toxic substances, and are effectively hazardous waste.

A single computer can contain up to 2 kg of lead, and the complex mixture of materials make PCs very difficult
to recycle.

A number of non-profit organizations collect electronic equipment including computers and printers, either for
reuse or for re-manufacture and recycling.

Drinks Bottles and Cans
These can be recycled - just put them in your recycling bag, basket or recycle bin for collection. Please rinse out your bottles before you put them out.

Electrical Equipment
• Most of the electrical equipment can be reused or broken down into parts.
• If the electrical equipment is still in full working order, sell it in a car boot sale or donate
it to charity.
• Your old products, you can contact your retailer as they may take it back.
• Always rather than throwing the items away try to repair items, others may have a use for the
item you no longer want it.
• Try to buy electrical goods that have a long life period.

Furniture
• Donate your usable furniture to charity shops, schools, community centers, friends or neighbors.
• Before you sell/ donate it clean and repair broken furniture.

Glass and Jars
• Glass is divided into 3 colors: green, brown and clear.
• Be more careful when handling broken glasses, wear gloves if possible.
• Deposit glass at your nearest recycling bank by throwing them into the appropriate container.
• On your weekly shop, many supermarkets have glass-recycling banks enabling to recycle glass.
• Wash out the bottle or jar before putting it into recycling bins.
• Jars can be used as small containers and bottles can be used as vases. Reuse glass at any time.

Magazines
Magazines can be recycled. Put them in your recycling basket, bag or bin for collection.

Metal
• Metal is generally divided into 2 groups: aluminum and steel.
• Aluminum metal is a non-magnetic while steel is. By using a magnet you can test which metal your waste.
• On the product to indicate what metal is made from will possibly be seen as a symbol, such as an aluminum mark.
• Usually food cans are usually made from steel while drink cans are usually made from aluminum.
• Deposit used cans at your local recycling bank.
• Make sure that the drink and food cans are clean before recycling.
• Only when the aerosol containers are completely empty they can be recycled.
• Plastic film made out of metallic, such as chocolate wrappers, cannot be recycled.

Mobiles
• Since most people in the county now own a mobile phone, they can be recycled.
• Donate old mobile phones to friends or family or to recycling centers.
• Old mobile phones are taken back for recycling by many manufacturers.
• Mobile phone recycling schemes were being set up by some companies.

Newspapers
These can be recycled. Put them in your basket, bag or bin for collection.

Paper
• Paper is divided into the following groups:
o Cardboard
o Magazines
o Newspapers
o Office paper
o Phone directories
• Recycle your used paper at Junk King.
• Reduce paper waste by canceling unwanted deliveries, or read news online as opposed to buying newspapers.
• The paper around the home can be reuse as scrap paper or packing material as well as envelops.
• When printing your paper set your printer to print on both sides.
• Buy recycled paper whenever it is possible.

Plastic
• There are about 50 different types of plastic. The main types include:
o HDPE – Opaque bottles
o PVC – clear bottles, with a seam running across the base
o PET – clear bottles, with a hard molded spot in the center of the base
• At your local recycling bank, if your home recycling bin doesn’t take plastic bottles.
• Before recycling clean the bottles.
• To reduce packaging waste, buy plastic bottles in bulk whenever it is possible.
• Next time when you’re at the shops, use carriers that are provided by some supermarkets.

Printer Cartridges
28 million homes have a personal computer and 90% of those homes have printers. The average household uses 2-3
ink jet cartridges a year and many offices use large numbers of laser cartridges.
Recycling printer cartridges really is worthwhile as cartridges can be expensive and re manufactured printer cartridges can cost as little as 10% of what original cartridges do. By lessening the amount of cartridges ending up in landfill sites, you are being kinder to the environment too.

Textiles
• Most home recycling centers, accept old clothes and textiles.
• Donate old clothes to charity organizations or give it away to your friends or family.
• Only donate clothes that are still usable.
• Old clothes can be used to make other textile items, such as cushion covers or cleaning cloths.
• When donating shoes, make sure that the shoes are tied together so that they don’t separate.

Vehicles
• Up to 80% of a vehicle can be recycled, for more information where to take your vehicle for recycling, go to the car repair shops or car retailers.
• Try and fix your vehicle instead of throwing it away.
• Sell unwanted vehicles.
• Engine oil can be recycled at civic amenity places.
• Contact your local council for further advice on recycling vehicles and their components.

Yellow Pages
We now accept yellow pages. Please recycle them in your basket or nearest recycle box.

Zinc
Batteries have zinc in them - see batteries for how you can recycle them.
* Shower instead of bath
* Put a "hippo" or brick in your loo cistern to reduce the amount of water used with each flush
* Use a waterbutt to collect any rain for watering houseplants.
